Why a 1 Year Old Photo shoot Matters More Than You Think

A Guide to

a Meaningful 1 Year Old Photography at home and outdoors

There’s something quietly powerful about the age of one.

Your baby is no longer a newborn, but not quite a toddler either. They’re standing (or wobbling), discovering their voice, reaching for you with intention — and showing you who they are becoming. ( Isn’t that amazing? )

As a photographer offering baby photography from newborn to 1 year old in London, Richmond Upon Thames for the past 8 years, I have heard many parents say:

We almost didn’t book a photoshoot — life just got busy, being back to work, starting nursery and .. .

And yet, this is often one of the sessions families treasure the most. Let’s find out why:

One Is Not “Just Another Birthday”

The first year is full of milestones — first smile, first steps, first sleepless nights. But the one-year mark is different.

It’s a pause.
A breath.
A moment to say: We made it.

A 1 year old photo shoot isn’t about perfect smiles or sitting still. It’s about capturing:

tiny hands reaching for mum
the way your baby leans into you for comfort
their curiosity, expressions, and early personality

This stage passes quickly, and photos become the way we remember how it felt, not just how it looked.

1 Year Old Lifestyle Photography,
Why starting your session from HOME?

If you are planning for a  lifestyle photography for your one-year-olds — My recommendation is to always to begin at home.

Why?

Because one-year-olds thrive in familiar spaces.

Your home is where:

they feel safest

their routines unfold naturally

real connection happens

So we are focussing less on posing and more on presence. There’s space for movement, cuddles, exploration — and gentle moments that feel honest and unforced. We are simply photographing

your family as you are.

Stories Shared by Families Like Yours

Golriz is the most wonderful, patient and easy going photographer. We have had repeated shoots with her and every one has given us the most magical memories. She made each of our 3 sessions over the years fun and stress free. And the pictures are always stunning. I’m so pleased she has captured the memories of our growing family!

What Changes Around the Age of One (And Why It Matters for Photography)

Around 12 months, babies go through big developmental shifts. Many are:

pulling themselves, cruising up or taking first steps
responding to their name and simple words
showing preferences and emotions
seeking comfort and reassurance from parents

From a photography perspective, this stage allows us to capture interaction, not just appearance.

A 1 year old photoshoot documents communication, connection, and early personality — which is why many families choose this age for lifestyle photography.

A Photoshoot That Includes You (Not Just Your Child)

This is something many parents don’t realise until after the session.

A 1 year old photoshoot is also about you.

Your baby won’t remember this stage — but one day, they’ll look back and see:

how you held them

how you looked at them

how deeply they were loved

Including parents in every family photo shoot creates images that grow in value over time. These aren’t just photos for now — they’re memories your child will one day treasure.

What do we look for when planning for your lifestyle newborn photography at home?

During your presession consultation, we discuss about different corners of your home, those that hold a special meaning to you, those with a great light and those that could potentially photograph well so our top 3 priorities are:

  • natural window light

  • simple, calm corners (a bed, sofa, or chair)

  • spaces that feel real and lived-in, those that holds meanings

You don’t need to tidy your whole home. I’ll gently guide you to the best light, suggest where to sit, and help everything feel relaxed and natural. Most sessions use just two or three spots — and that’s more than enough.

A few simplest ideas for an in home newborn session are:

  • The master bedroom, with neutral or softly patterned bedding — a calm, familiar space that naturally draws the focus to connection rather than surroundings.

  • The sofa, where you snuggle together as a family — perfect for capturing warmth, closeness, and those quiet, real moments.

  • By a window, where natural light filters in — simple, soft light that beautifully supports newborn photos at home.

Your home does not need to be Instagram-ready,
where your memories happen!

What Is Included in a 1 Year Old Photoshoot?

A lifestyle 1 year old photography session in Richmond, London usually includes:

time for your child to settle and explore
a mix of individual baby portraits and family interaction
gentle guidance rather than strict posing
breaks for feeds, cuddles, or reassurance
Sessions are designed around your child’s rhythm, not the clock. This approach allows for relaxed images that feel natural and timeless.

“My Baby Won’t Sit Still” — And That’s the Point

One of the biggest worries parents have before a first birthday photoshoot is how to make their ‘just-discovererd-the-joy-of-movement’ baby stay still!

Let me reassure you:
One-year-olds don’t need to sit still for beautiful photographs.

In fact, their movement is part of the story.

Being a lifestyle family photographer, I follow your child’s lead. We allow breaks, explore light-filled corners, and embrace the in-between moments — because those are often the most meaningful.

Digital or Prints?

From Photos to Heirlooms: Why This Stage Deserves to Be Printed

At one year old, your baby is changing fast. Photos on your phone get lost is about to explode ( adding more icloud storage is not too far ), but printed images live with you.

Many families choose to turn their session into:

  • framed artwork for their home

  • a small album telling the story of their first year

  • a tangible reminder of a season that passed too quickly

This is why I guide families beyond the session itself — helping them choose images that deserve a place on the wall, not just in a folder.

Booking 1 year old photography isn’t about ticking a box.

It’s about choosing to remember.

To slow down.
To honour this chapter.
To create something lasting from a fleeting stage of childhood.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s “worth it”, this is your sign:
These moments don’t come back — but the photographs will.
