Spring family photo shoot, what to wear and how to style?

Spring is one of the most loved times for a family photoshoot, with London’s parks and green spaces bursting into colour.

Planning your spring family session? I know that feeling — a mix of excitement and overwhelm. Too many outfit options… or none that feel quite right? And where do you even start?

Let’s take a deep breath and explore a few easy tips on what to wear, how to mix and match colours, and how to keep things light and lovely — just like the season itself — so your family portraits feel relaxed, connected, and full of spring magic.

To begin with, here is one thing I would love you to consider:

What you wear at your family photo shoot,
makes a huge impact on the outcome of
your photography journey.

The best part? You don’t have to figure it all out on your own — I’ll be with you every step of the way.

Once your spring family photoshoot is booked, we’ll start planning together — not just for the beautiful moments we’ll capture, but also for what everyone will wear.

We’ll look through your current wardrobe, chat about your home style, think about where you might like to hang your frames, and even go over your favourite layout templates for any printed artwork. It’s all about making the process simple and personal — so the end result feels truly you.

All my clients receive a full styling guide to give them hints and ideas on
”How different colour pallets would look and feel in your spring family memories.”

Before we dive into outfit ideas and the colours that bring your spring family photos to life, let’s start with a few tips to make the whole process feel a little easier and more fun:

1. Start with Mum, yes not the kids!

Let’s be honest — aren’t you usually the last to get dressed when heading out?
As mums, we often make sure the kids look adorable first, then quickly throw on whatever works in the moment.
It’s the same when planning outfits for a family photoshoot. I often hear: “Once the kids are sorted, I just find something that goes with theirs!”

But this time, as you’re getting ready for your spring family photos, I’d love for you to do it differently — start with YOUR/Mum outfit.

Choose something that makes you feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable. From there, we’ll build the rest of the family’s looks around yours. When you feel great, everything else naturally comes together.

Quick tip: Springtime — with its soft breeze, blooming flowers, and golden light — is the perfect excuse to wear that flowy dress you love!
It moves beautifully in photos and adds such a lovely, natural feel to your images. ✨

2. Choose a Light, Fresh Colour Palette

Spring is all about soft, airy tones. Go for:

  • Pastels (dusty pinks, dusty/baby blue, soft mint, lavender)

  • Neutral earth tones (cream, beige, oat, soft grey)

  • A pop of floral-inspired colour (sage, peach, butter yellow)

3. Colour coordination is key, no need to match!

Choosing colours could be a bit overwhelming in our busy schedules, however trust me it makes a huge impact on how your photos would look. You are asking: what should we consider when selecting a colour palette?

Once you receive my style guide or by simply looking through this Pinterest board,

– Firstly check which colour pallet attracts you the most,
– Which options are easily found in your wardrobes or you are happy to look for/invest in to achieve the look you are after?

– Which pallet beautifully go with your home style? so once we are creating your home gallery you can excitedly expect a boost in your home decor. Alternatively, you can choose to wear your favourite outfits and choose the Black and White version of your photos to go on your frames!

We are going to talk about certain colours suitable for a family photo shoot in Spring in this article but bare in mind always look for shades and compliments, avoiding repeating same colours and tones is key!

Limit your family’s outfits to only one person wearing a patterned item.

4.  Experiment with texture, Think Light Fabrics & Movement

Spring breezes and soft light are made for floaty dresses, linen shirts, and cotton layers. These fabrics look amazing in photos and add a sense of life and motion. A dress for mum or daughter always photographs beautifully in the spring — it adds elegance and grace with very little effo.

5. Consider the Location & Background

Think about where your session will take place:

  • In the park or garden? Avoid too much green so you don’t blend into the background.

  • Among flowers? Subtle floral prints can work — just keep them soft and not too bold.

Pick tones that stand out gently from your setting without clashing.

.

6. Think Ahead to Your Home & Final Prints

These images aren’t just for social media — they’ll become framed memories in your home. So think about how your chosen colours and tones will look in your living space.

Warm neutrals and soft pastels tend to work beautifully with most interiors.

One Last Tip: Wear the Dress!

Spring, with its soft breeze and gentle sun, is the perfect time to embrace a dress — it moves beautifully, feels comfortable, and brings a touch of elegance to your portraits.
